Change default login URL in WordPress

A step-by-step procedure on how to change or hide your default WordPress login URL in order to make your website more secure.

Requirements

  • Admin access to WordPress.

Procedure

1.

Login to the WordPress dashboard. Navigate to Plugins > Add New.

Type WPS Hide Login into the search box.

Locate the WPS Hide Login plugin in the list and click Install Now.

Wait for the plugin to install itself, then click Activate.

Navigate to Settings > WPS Hide Login. Set up your custom Login URL and a Redirection URL. Click Save Changes.

Take note of your new Login URL.

Note: If you loose or forget your new login URL, there are 2 ways to prevent locking yourself out of your WordPress installation:

1. Recover or change the login URL through the wp_options table of your MySQL database. Just look for the whl_page option (source).

2. Rename the wps-hide-login folder in /wp-content/plugins/ after which you should be able to log in to your WordPress from /wp-admin (source).
